NVQ in Volunteer Management
Community organisations working with volunteers may be interested in this award as a way to up skill volunteer/staff team leaders. It is a very manageable short award covering just two units of an NVQ 3.

The Award is aligned to the Managing Volunteers National Occupational Standards at Level 3 and is accredited by Lantra, represents 60 guided learning hours and covers the following units:

• plan, organise and monitor volunteers (NOS D1)
• lead, motivate and support volunteers (NOS D2).

Partners will support learners and employers to choose from the four delivery options by providing course introductory sessions and self-assessment tools. The delivery options developed respond to partners’ experiences of common learning support needs, learning styles, prior achievement levels and work settings.

Every option will include learner introduction and initial assessment (identifying support needs), tutorials, blended learning resources and worksheets and optional accreditation. All delivery options will enable completion within a 12-20 week period and have variable levels of tutor input as follows:

• Fully taught courses (6 taught sessions and tutorials) - suits learners from small organisations, those new to volunteer management and learners with support needs.

• Fast track courses (two taught sessions and tutorials) - suits learners with experience by refreshing knowledge and supporting attainment of accreditation.

• Service Specific clusters (mixes taught sessions with peer to peer learning sets and tutorials). This suits learners within similar work settings (e.g. youth volunteering, environment etc) by utilising peer learning to address service specific issues.

• Self directed distance learning – using coaching and on-line learning resources for those confident expert practitioners who seek a formal qualification.

To be eligible to apply for a bursary you must:

• directly manage volunteers in England
• be willing to undertake one of the approved skills development packages on offer
• meet the criteria of the accrediting body for entry to the chosen level of award, irrespective of whether you wish to obtain accreditation or not
• have your application endorsed by your current ‘line manager’, or equivalent, i.e. formal permission from the organisation to participate.

There are a limited number of bursaries available, so early application is advised.

To help ensure a fair and reasonable distribution of bursaries, particularly if we encounter very high demand, Capacitybuilders may choose to prioritise applications against some or all of the following criteria:

• The number of volunteers that the applicant manages.
• The sector that the applicant works within.
• The number of bursaries that an individual organisation will benefit from (Capacitybuilders will initially support up to a maximum of 15 Volunteer Managers from any one organisation. This number may be increased at a later date, based on a first come first served model, if funds permit).
• The spread of bursaries across the nine Government Office regions.
• The spread of bursaries across organisations working in different fields and with diverse communities.

If prioritisation is necessary and, as a result, an individual is initially not offered a bursary, they may be able to receive one later on in the programme without making a further application.

This summary has been provided by provided by Patricia Gibbs from Adult Education in Gloucestershire (ADED). Download a draft letter for managers to use when supporting applications for the NVQ here. For further information about the Award in Volunteer Management, please email: volunteermanagement@skills-thirdsector.org or for more information visit the Capacity Builders’ website.

ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership & Management Skills
This highly regarded Programme, leading to a nationally recognised qualification, has previously targeted Middle Managers working in the National Probation Service. In line with developments in the Criminal Justice arena it is now being opened up to VCS and HMPS partners in the South West.

The Programme, consisting of 4 workshops (3 x 2 days and 1 x 3 days between November 2009 and March 2010) is co-ordinated by the South West Training Consortium, part of the National Probation Service, and is delivered by Dr Paul Cooper, a management and training consultant who is also a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management. Whilst the Programme was developed within the Probation Service, the subject matter of leadership and management is naturally applicable across NOMS and the VCS.

Guideposts Trust offers Relationships and Sexuality Training
September, Stroud and Cheltenham

The course is based on the understanding that people with learning disabilities have the same rights as other adults to develop their sexual identity and to take part in adult relationships.  It is also based on the belief that education about sexual matters and relationships helps to protect people from harm or exploitation.  The course is delivered by staff who are experienced and have undertaken specific training to ensure that they are equipped to deal with the issues raised in group settings.

The training is divided into three parts, ‘About Myself’, ‘About My Relationships’ and ‘My Sexuality’.  Each part consists of twelve weekly sessions, and each session lasts for two hours.
