Social Enterprise Works have been busy supporting the development of established third sector organisations in Bristol, West of England, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, from our office in Bristol.

Due to high demand we have made the radical decision to escape our cosy office in Bristol and travel to your area.

Funded by Business Link, we can support existing Social Enterprises who have a constitution or legal structure and have the equivalent of one paid full time employee.

If you fit the bill, we can offer you FREE specialist support from a SFEDI accredited business adviser.

Severn Wye Energy Agency: Energy Ambassadors Scheme
Did you know that an estimated 12% of households in the South West are either as risk of or living in Fuel Poverty? Some of  the most vulnerable households are: 

  • Those on a limited income
  • Older adults
  • Those with long term health conditions
  • Those who suffer from mental ill health
  • Those with young children
  • Unemployed individuals
  • Immigrants to the U.K

Want to expand your knowledge base and help your clients? Come and join SWEA for some free training and become an Energy Ambassador to become part of  a Europe wide project and offer your clients practical advice and find out how to make referrals enabling clients to access advice and grants to help them combat Fuel Poverty.

The Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF) is holding a number of events around the region for practitioners and workers:

Advocacy for children & young people in Family Group Conferences
24 -25 February 2010 – Cheltenham (exact venue tbc)
Cost: £200

This is an opportunity to attend a practical, two day advocacy skills course based on research and learning from the past ten years’ work.  Experienced trainer Hilary Horan has set up and managed eight FGC and advocacy services in the South West.

Over the 2 day training you will:

  • Increase your understanding and confidence in managing children and young people’s attendance and participation at their FGC
  • Consider the role of advocacy for children and young people in FGCs
  • Identify ways of ensuring that young people are heard and can participate in plans that are made for them
  • Practise and develop skills in communicating with children, applying successful methods of engagement within a short time frame
  • Explore issues around boundaries, confidentiality, recording and health and safety in the context of an FGC
  • Debate the role of the advocate in private family time
  • Share and exchange good practice in this area.

Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion Regional Event

This free event, organised by Department for Work and Pensions, Third Sector European Network, South West Action on Poverty and South West Forum will:

  • Introduce the EY 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion and explain its purpose
  • Raise awareness of poverty in the South West particularly in rural and coastal communities
  • Highlight current activity to combat poverty within the region
  • Explore ways in which action to combat poverty can be increased

Survive and Thrive: Preparing the Ground

BME Conference
City Works in Gloucester

Hosted by Gloucestershire VCS Assembly and Linking Communities, this conference will explore issues for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities and will focus on solutions to increase involvement and influence.

ACEVO Spring Conference 2010
Title: A Joined Up Future for Community Health and Social Care?

The Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) Spring conference will examine the co-ordination of health and social care (HSC) services, and the impact of the introduction of a National Care Service.

The conference will cover topics including the development of the Government’s plans for community health services and social care, and what implementation may look like, the likely impact of public spending cuts on HSC services and how HSC services will be regulated under the new joint system to be operated by the Care Quality Commission.

ILM Level 5 Award in Leadership & Management Skills
This highly regarded Programme, leading to a nationally recognised qualification, has previously targeted Middle Managers working in the National Probation Service. In line with developments in the Criminal Justice arena it is now being opened up to VCS and HMPS partners in the South West.

The Programme, consisting of 4 workshops (3 x 2 days and 1 x 3 days between November 2009 and March 2010) is co-ordinated by the South West Training Consortium, part of the National Probation Service, and is delivered by Dr Paul Cooper, a management and training consultant who is also a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management. Whilst the Programme was developed within the Probation Service, the subject matter of leadership and management is naturally applicable across NOMS and the VCS.

Free training from the National Autistic Society
Gloucestershire County Council, through its 'Transforming Short Breaks Pathfinder Project' (part of ‘Aiming High for Disabled Children’) is funding the National Autistic Society (NAS) to deliver training for out of school settings and organisations working with children and young people across Gloucestershire. NAS can provide this training direct to staff in your setting, or you can access the sessions being run round the county.

Guideposts Trust offers Relationships and Sexuality Training
September, Stroud and Cheltenham

The course is based on the understanding that people with learning disabilities have the same rights as other adults to develop their sexual identity and to take part in adult relationships.  It is also based on the belief that education about sexual matters and relationships helps to protect people from harm or exploitation.  The course is delivered by staff who are experienced and have undertaken specific training to ensure that they are equipped to deal with the issues raised in group settings. 

The training is divided into three parts, ‘About Myself’, ‘About My Relationships’ and ‘My Sexuality’.  Each part consists of twelve weekly sessions, and each session lasts for two hours.

Guideposts Trust also offers a counselling service, which aims to support adults with learning disabilities through the process of understanding the effect of past experiences on current relationships and behaviour in order to  bring about change.
