Volunteer Managers Best Practice

GAVCA have developed three specialist courses for Volunteer Managers:

  • Recruiting and Selecting Volunteers
  • Volunteers and the Law
  • Managing and Supporting Volunteers

These courses are accredited by Open College Network Credit4Learning. Upon successful completion and certification, learners will be awarded 1 credit per course at level 3 (A-Level standard).

Pre-course work

Once you have enrolled on the course you will receive a piece of pre-course work. The pre-course work is a small piece of work (a maximum of 2-3 hours) that all participants attending the Volunteering Best Practice courses are asked to complete. There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers – you are asked to draw upon your existing knowledge and experience and build upon this during the course. This work will form part of your workbook for assessment.

Workbook

Each Volunteer Managers Best Practice course has a workbook designed to guide you through the course step-by-step. The workbook will contain useful learning and reference information, as well as exercises and case study’s to support the teaching on the day. There will be space for you to write notes, but please do bring along a pen and additional paper encase you need to make additional notes on the day.

Exercises

You will be given copies of the exercises to record your work on during the day. These exercises and your pre-course work will be photocopied at the end of the course so that we can take the copy away and assess your work. This means that you can take your workbook, pre-course work and any other notes home with you that day, and we will assess your work from the copies we take.

Assessment

The course tutor will assess your workbook exercises and pre-course work against the learning outcomes on the OCN Credit4Learning Unit Description. Please do not be concerned about this - our courses are delivered in a supportive environment and we will cover everything you need to know during the course. Occasionally, the tutor may need to contact some learners to ask them to do additional work to meet the learning outcomes. If this is required, we will give you plenty of notice, time and support to complete this work.

Verification

We will arrange for the verification of your work to be completed no later than two weeks after the course has run. Our internal verifier will check that the tutor has assessed the work according to the learning outcomes, and that your work meets the criteria for the course. This is standard practice and ensures that all learners are being equally, fairly and correctly assessed.

Certification

Once the internal verifier has checked your work, we will contact you to let you know whether you have achieved the credit. We will then submit the relevant paperwork to OCN Credit4Learning and ILM and they will usually send us the certificates within a few weeks. As soon as GAVCA receives the certificates, they will be sent out to you.
